VOTING RECOMMENDATION FOR September 9, 2008

If the new teachers contract is approved along with the warrants already passed on March 11, 2008, then Swanzey Taxpayers can expect an $1,180.00 tax increase on their ($200,000 home) December 2008 tax bill, due to the Monadnock School District portion of the bill.

THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE ANY STATE, COUNTY (including the new jail), or TOWN INCREASES!

VOTE NO on September 9, 2008 at your regular polling place!

The Monadnock School Taxpayers Association does not support passage of the new teachers contract because there is way too much "pork" in it and the taxpayers of the district cannot afford all the extra perks and privileges that drive up the costs. It is definitely NOT A FAIR CONTRACT for the taxpayers of the district.

Early teacher retirement, for ALL of the teachers already on it or who will receive it if the contract passes, will cost the taxpayers, over the course of the payout, between 4 and 5 million dollars. This money will not help educate children at all, but will be flushed down the drain. 2nd, the evergreen clause is now enshrined in state law thanks to the teacher unions and Senator Molly Kelly and Gov. Lynch. Conventional wisdom indicates, and the attorney for Monadnock Regional School District agrees, that if the contract passes, the Sullivan lawsuit will be moot.

Also, in the new contract, the teacher union gets to decide if the school district can change health insurance carriers (to save money, the district would do this). Last year, the district could have saved almost $500,000 in health care costs, but the teacher union refused to let the school district change carriers. Half a million bucks, once again, flushed down the drain, never to go for the education of kids.

The School Board has voted to present two warrants next March totaling $30,600,000 for construction of a new middle school ($18,000,000) and another $12,000,000 for high school renovations. You ain't seen nothing yet when it comes to next year's budget! Whatever happened to "pay-as-you-go?" Too bad we wasted those surpluses. Great management of our tax dollars!
